Professor Emeritus, Chonnam University
Dr. Jae-Yoon Chung was a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Chonnam University Medical School from the year 1991 to 2015. In the year 2015, he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus from the Chonnam University Medical School for his incredible contribution to its department. He is currently the Director of Spine Centre at the Gwangju Hyundai Hospital.
In the year 2011, he was elected the Chairman of the Spine Section of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA) and during his tenure, he was instrumental in transforming the name to Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS) when the Society decided to expand. He became the first President of the Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS) when the name was successfully coined in the year 2012. He is presently the Chief National Delegate representing South Korea to the APOA.
He is renowned in Asia and other continents for his enthusiasm in teaching young surgeons through teaching programmes, including live operative demonstrations and lectures. Besides active participation as faculty in operative courses and workshops, he was able to channel his passion through the role as the Editor-in-Chief in the Asian Spine Journal (ASJ) and the Journal of Korean Spine Society from the year 2006 to 2014.
Internationally, he also played various key roles within numerous Korean societies and international societies. His role encompassed of being the President of the 7th Combined Meeting of Spine and Paediatric Sections of Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA) in 2007, the President of the Pacific Asian Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Society (PASMISS) in 2004 and was the President of the Korean Orthopaedic Association from year 2014 to 2015. The 7th Combined Meeting of Spine and Paediatric Sections of APOA (2007) and the Korean – Japanese Combined Orthopaedic Symposium (2009) was a great success under his presidency.
In his home country, South Korea, he was also the Past President of the Korean Bone Metabolism Society, the Korean Orthopaedic Research Society, the Korean Society of Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery, and the Korean Spine Society during his academic appointments throughout his notable prestigious career in the field of orthopaedic surgery.
With his great devotion to education and effort to improve orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Jae-Yoon Chung has earned respect and appreciation from the young surgeons, especially his fellow spine faculties.
